Ever since December 2017 when I first published my findings, I've been gratified by the many people around the world who have enjoyed my customized build of FFmpeg and mpv. I have also revised and updated this entire post and all 10 appendices from top to bottom. Perhaps the biggest enhancement with this latest update is full support for all major forms of live streaming, including the HLS protocol. It will take less than 5 minutes to prepare my script for execution! Automating the process is not only much faster and less tedious, but it greatly simplifies my instructions and dramatically reduces the chance of making mistakes. That way, it still serves the purpose of a learning-oriented "tutorial" while also making it extremely simple to get your system up and running as a media powerhouse. But I have now taken things to the next level and combined the best of two worlds – an automated script filled with plain-English annotations that explain exactly what I'm doing at every step. Finally, I wrote ten separate appendices with tons of useful information, including how to use mpv and FFmpeg – and how to download and stream the highest-quality videos from hundreds of websites with a tool known as youtube-dl.
